February is named American Heart Month!
Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women?
The good news is, heart disease is preventable and controllable through
- Eating a healthy diet
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Exercising regularly
- Monitoring your blood pressure
- Not smoking
- Limiting alcohol use
One of my favorite heart healthy foods are beets as they help the body protect against heart disease. I have enjoyed beets this week as I have put them on everything. Beets on salads, beets on pizza, beets in smoothies, and beets as snacks.
Beets are an often overlooked vegetable as they are usually hidden in the grocery store and most people do not know what to do with them. Once you hear all the great health benefits these vegetables hold, you may look a little harder to find them. Who would refuse a health food like this…
1. Weight Management
Beets are low in calorie and high in fiber which helps keep you satisfied. The calories in beets are full of nutrients so they are considered a smart carbohydrate which will fuel your body.
2. Packed with Minerals
Beets are rich in sodium, calcium, phosphorous, iron and magnesium. They also contain noticeable amounts of niacin, Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Sounds like nature’s daily vitamin.
3. Anti-Inflammatory Benefits
The blood-red betalains in beets have been shown to reduce chronic inflammation which helps against diseases such as cancer, arthritis, bronchitis, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and heart disease.
4. Natural Detox
The antioxidants in beets support cleansing by making unwanted toxins in the body water-soluble so they are excreted through the urine.
5. Improved Mental Health
Nutrients in beets helps fight depression and Alzeheimer’s disease. It is also said to have the same effect as chocolate on the mind!
The best part is these heart healthy beets are available year round! Here are my favorite beet recipes which are another 5 Reasons to Love Beets:
